Could be a night time event

Gin Pit seen as a suitable compact location for such an event

A&T to consider whether such an event at Gin Pit is feasible for the 2011 season and to revert.

CLGP AGM by Garry Baines

Hi All
The CLGP AGM has been set for Wednesday 1st December 2010 at Gin Pit commencing 7.30pm.
As usual we will plan the races for the 2011 Calendar. Please come armed with your race proposals. If you have more than one option this may allow for greater flexibility and allow us to spread the races out more evenly during the course of the season. If possible please avoid any potential clashes with important events, such as Road Relay Races, which may detract from the numbers competing in your race.
A representative from Bolton United Harriers will also be attending the meeting. They have applied to join the competition in 2011.
Please give me notice of any particular items you wish to be included on the agenda. I will forward a copy of the agenda in due course.
Thanks
Garry Baines

Gin Pit 5 by Garry Baines of A&T

Race Report – Gin Pit 5 10th October 2010

A high calibre field of around 200 runners attended the Gin Pit 5 race, which also served as the final CLGP race of the 2010 Calendar.

The race was won by Shaun Dimelow of Barnsley Harriers in an excellent time 26:39. He was hotly pursued by Wigan Phoenix’s Mike O’Neill in 26:50.

Horwich RMI dominated the early positions with 10 runners in the top 23 places, taking the Team Prize in this event. Colin Rigby took the V40 prize in 27:26 and Steve Nolan the V50 in 28:46. This should be enough to see them through the CLGP title for 2010 and congratulations are in order.

The A&T runners strived hard to keep up the challenge with 4 runners under the 30 minute mark. Pete Chan was amongst this group and took the V45 prize in 29:04.

Burden Road Runners, as ever, fielded a competitive team and were always in contention at the top of the pile. They were rewarded with Dave Pearson’s V55 prize in 35:33.

Swinton Running Club also turned out in force making the short trip down the East Lancs Road.

John Reilly of Middleton Harriers took the V60 prize in 32:20 and Keith Robson the V65 in 42:06.

For the Ladies Anna Lupton of Radcliffe claimed 1st prize with 31:03. Where have you been all season Anna?

Jean Mann came in 3rd for A&T with 32:52, whilst Suzanne Budgett bagged 4th spot with 32:56.

The Team Prize was won by A&T, but this was probably not enough to prevent Burnden from retaining the overall Ladies Championship for the season.

Lauren Marsden of Swinton won the L35 division with and Kirsty Preece of Burnden grabbed the L40 award with 34:48.

Janine Ridgard of East Cheshire with 34:31 was first in the L45 category and Joan Jackson of Northern Vets came home in 35:17 for the L50 prize. For the over 55s Sheila Duckworth, an unattached runner took the honours with 39:35 and Eileen Royle of Radcliffe claimed the L60 prize in 42:08.

The various winners of the CLGP prizes for the 2010 Season will be announced shortly and a Prize Presentation evening will take place at Gin Pit on Friday 19th November, commencing at 7.30pm. There will be a small cover charge of £2 per head which will be collected on the night. Pasties inevitably will be provided and entertainment in the form of a disco and if anyone’s up for it, karaoke, is included.

Smithills Serpent - by Chris Greenhall

After heavy rain the previous day, runners were greeted with dry but breezy conditions. 2009 race winner Anthony Valentine of Bolton again took out the race but pulled up with an injury on the first lap. This left Richard Howarth of Horwich to take over the lead with his club mate Colin Rigby chasing. After 3 laps Howarth held the lead and won by a comfortable margin in 29.01, almost a minute faster than Colin, who took 2nd and 1st V40 place. Champagne and a microwave oven were Richard’s reward at the post race presentation. Horwich, out in force impressively filled the first 7 places to easily win the A team race (first 10). Indeed with another large turnout they were assured of winning the B team race as well with the next 8, and also Vets (first 6 to count).
Martyn Pollitt, Burnden (45), Graham Schofield, Horwich (50), Ian Hamilton, A&T (55), Tony Hesketh Horwich (60) and Dave Waywell, Wesham (65) all gained first places in their respective vet categories.
Josie Maley of A&T continued her impressive season’s form by holding off Burnden’s Izzy Hughes by 42 seconds, winning in 35.58. Champagne and a gazebo for Josie. Izzy was 1st 40, with further age category honours going to Carmel Sullivan, Wesham (35), Brenda Wane, A&T (45), Anne Ferguson, Burnden (50), Sheila Jones, Radcliffe (55) and Eileen Royle, Radcliffe(60).
Burnden took the Ladies team prize on the day with Izzy, Kirsty Preece and Anne but A&T took the Grand Prix honours with the lowest 4 to count. On the day Horwich men obviously won the team prize with Martin Jones 3rd ahead of Graham Schofield being 4th counter.
Of the 87 finishers, 80 were runners running for the 8 grand prix clubs. 58 of those were Vets. Hopefully all enjoyed the challenge of the testing course and some runners may have even appreciated the fantastic views at the top of the course.
Thanks to all those that made this race happen and also to Bolton Mountain Rescue for their support on the day.

Haigh Hall 4 - by Wigan Phoenix

The third year of the haigh Hall 4 mile series got off to a blistering start when Matt Clowes, visiting from Staffs Moorlands, smashed the course record by a massive 45 seconds to finish in 19.55 – and became the first runner to beat 20 mins

The men’s places were completed by 3 horwich RMI runners, James Kevan, Richard Howarth and Martyn Bell, and Eddie Simpson from Dallam with less than 20 seconds between them. Martyn Bell was also first V40

The ladies’ race was won by our own Rachael Moore in 25.20, closely followed by josie Maley (Astley and Tydlesley) in 25.24 and Joanna Goorney (Wesham) (also first vet) in 26.02

Junior honours were claimed by Chorley Harrier’s Tom Belcher in 25 .09

In the Grand Prix Horwich dominated the places (easily winning the team prize) and Astley and T the numbers taking part – well done

Burnden won the ladies’ team prize

Radcliffe 10km Report - Written by Mark Emmett

On a warm sunny spring morning 231 runners ventured onto the new Radcliffe 10K course, it was billed as a "Brand New Challenging Course" and appeared to live up to its new name. The glorious weather and dry trails ensured that this would be a fiercely fought contest between local runners.

1st home from Salford Harriers (ex Radcliffe AC) was Ben Riddell in a quick time of 33.23. Ben led from the start to the finish and was 56 seconds ahead of 2nd place man Alastair Murray from Horwich RMI. The grand prix team of Horwich males romped home with the team prize finishing in 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 10th.

Amongst the field of 231 starters were 73 ladies, 1st home for the ladies was Tess Walker from Salford Harriers in a very credible 38.01, Tess was closely followed 9 seconds later by Dionne Allen of Horwich RMI.

The ladies team prize went to Wesham Road Runners who followed up there success at the recent St Annes 120 miler, finishing 3rd, 7th and 10th ladies.

230 runners finished the course and were able to relax at the finish in the sun cheering their fellow runners over the line. All in all an easy day for the Race officials as there were no problems on the new course which appeared well received by most tired runners who were glad of the water at the finish.

All the best

Message from Radcliffe AC

Just a reminder to anyone attending our race on 18th April they can enter on line at ukresults.net or on the day At Radcliffe Cricket Club, Homer Street (Opposite Bob-In Motor spares) off Bolton Road Radcliffe. The start is a 5 minute or so warm up down Cams Lane. Road or trail shoes should be fine, if it stays dry I'd go for road shoes as the trail is quite well drained. Presentation and food available at the Cricket Club aftere the event.

St.Annes 10 - Written by Dave Waywell (Wesham)

Yesterday’s fine glorious weather attracted a record number of runners to this popular local event, the 19th Ultrafit St Annes 10 Mile, hosted by Lancashire Fire Rescue and Wesham Road Runners. 351 runners took part in the race which was sponsored by Ultrafit Magazine and Sweatshop. The race also raised £160 for Rosemere Charity.

Although the race itself didn’t go without incident as on the night before there was a malfunction on the door of the van, which had items needed for the race, and the organiser was unable to open it. Fortunately this was rectified too late in the evening and the organiser had to make an early start on the morning of the race to set up the course. There were further mishaps during the race whereby the runners were sent the wrong way and a runner from Todmorden collapsed a mile from the finish and he was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The race incorporated three separate championships, the Fire Service Championship, Northern Veterans Championship and it was also the second race of 9 in the Central Lancashire Grand Prix.

The open race was won by Steve Littler from local club Wesham Road Runners in a superb time of 53.40 as he trains for the London Marathon next month. The ladies open race was won by Sarah Ridehalgh from Accrington Road Runners in an equally superb time of 61.56.

It was double glory for the teams as Wesham Road Runners took the first team place in both the men’s and the ladies team. Steve Littler, Barry Norman, Jason Barlow and John Collier made up the men’s team and in the ladies team were Joanna Goorney, Sarah Sherratt and Carmel Sullivan.

The Fire Service Championship was won by Graham Taylor from Tyne & Wear Fire Service, in a time of 55.14. Graham was second in the open race. The first Fire Service Lady was Connie Hydes from Strathclyde Fire Service who crossed the finishing line in a time of 83.31. There were a record number of entries from the Fire Service with 31 men and 8 ladies entered prior to the race.

Calling Race Directors

Andrew Coates has been contacted by a woman called Abigail Burgess who is trying to talk to race directors as part of her degree and is struggling(see below). It seems a shame that whilst Road Race Directors moan about legislation, police, red tape and the like they are not (apparently) prepared to engage with someone engaged in a formal study that may turn out to be of some use to the sport.

I wonder if your race directors would be prepared to talk to her? Who knows the CLGP and the clubs may get a little credit for helping where others have not!! If they get involved they will be in good company, I know she has had contact with some of the big charities fundraising through running.

Thanks
Garry
